Course Descriptions


Arabic
The focus of the Arabic department is to prepare students to read and understand the basic grammar of Qur’anic Arabic, while memorizing at least four to five Surah each year. We also endeavor provide students with the necessary skills to communicate through the study of conversational Arabic.

Islamic Studies
There are four Islamic Studies courses at the high school level, one per grade level. Each course is independent of the other, yet each offers a rigorous focus on Islamic history, philosophy, and foundations of Qur’anic principles.

  • 9th Grade – History of Muslim Civilizations
  • 10th Grade – Islam and the World
  • 11th Grade – Contemporary Issues in Islam
  • 12th Grade – Islamic Philosophy

English Literature
As the Qur’an is the foundation of all literary studies, the English Literature department has a strong focus on advanced studies of writing, reading, and vocabulary. This literary study includes an in-depth engagement in various genres from the Islamic, African diaspora, African American, Sixteenth Century and contemporary perspectives. High school students are required to have four units of English Literature, each includes two semesters of study.

Mathematics
Our Mathematics courses are designed to challenge the intellect and thinking, and push students to exercise higher order thinking as they become fluent in the language of mathematics and leave the classroom with knowledge and power over their own learning.

Science
Students are required to have 4 units (two semesters per course) of the following subjects: physical science, biology, chemistry, and physics. These courses at Mohammed Schools include study of the connection between the sciences and Qur’an, while engaging in real life connections to Allah (Al Khaliq/The Creator) and His creation.

Social Studies
Students need three units of social studies. The social studies curriculum offers a strong focus on

Students are encouraged to enroll in courses that engage them in the study of life skills and practical application.

Physical Education
High school students are required to take one year of physical education & health. The courses are single-gendered classes and incorporate dance, music and fitness within the Physical Education curriculum.

The 9th Grade Islamic Studies course is divided into two parts: The Study of the Qur’an and its Teachings and the History of Muslim Civilization. We provide the students with an introduction to the Qur’anic Sciences, such as the history of its revelation, its collection, preservation, order and arrangement, language and style, and commentary. The course also provides the students with a basic knowledge of the Qur’an’s teachings on Faith, Worship, and Morals. In the History of Muslim Civilization the course provides the students with a general overview of the history of the development of Muslim civilization from its beginning in Southwest Asia, its spread through out the world, and the current status.

The 11th Grade Islamic Studies Course consists of a general review and study of the doctrines of Islam, the devotional observances, Islam’s guidance for the spiritual life, the view of knowledge and hygiene in Islam, the systems which regulate Islamic society, and a study of the two sources of Islamic legislation: the Qur’an and Hadith. Topics introduced include the basic tenants, rituals, government in Islam, the economic system in Islam, women and family in Islam, the system of war in Islam, punishment in Islam, and tolerance in Islam.
